Austin Thyroid Endocrinology
What is Endocrinology?
Endocrinology is the science of hormones, which are substances released by the endocrine glands that virtually work on every cell of the body, regulating the function. Controlling your hormones is controlling your life.
The body contains more than 100 different types of hormones that pour into your bloodstream at the rate of thousands of billions of units per day, regulating everything from your heartbeat to your breathing. Hormones make us who we are. They put us to sleep at night and wake us in the morning. They build dormant in muscle tone; they control the blood pressure; they lubricate joints; they govern growth; they burn fat; they govern the menstrual cycle; and they allow pregnancy and childbirth to occur.
The hormones fight stress, relieve depression, calm anxiety, make and keep memories, maintain the correct level of glucose in the bloodstream, control the sex drive, virility, and fertility, and stimulate the brain and the immune system. You cannot live without hormones.
Some of the hormone levels decline with age, in both men and women. That is the reason why it is extremely important to have baseline levels drawn at a younger age so that you know exactly what your bodys hormonal balance means. When all of our hormones are at optimum levels, our bodies are healthy, efficient, flexible, and strong.
The endocrine system operates as a sensitive control mechanism that monitors, regulates, and adjusts specific hormones in the bloodstream. Today, no computer system exists that can match the complexity of a healthy hormone system.
Examples of hormonal imbalances are:
* excessive thirst and urination
* heat and cold intolerance
* tiredness
* dry or oily skin
* irregular or lack of menstrual periods
* lack of sexual desire
* impotence
* enlargement of the breasts in men
* breast discharge
* acne
* excessive hair growth
* bone fractures
* recurrent kidney stones
* prominence of the eyes
* dark, white or pink skin patches
* neck lumps
* salt craving
* dizziness when standing
* low or high calcium
* excessive perspiration
Endocrine diseases are widespread, often missed, and can be treated.
