BAY TO BREAKERS
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- About 40,000 people signed up for the 101st Bay to Breakers race in San Francisco yesterday. But not all the runners were wearing shorts. A few decided to travel light for the seven and a-half mile race -- wearing only their sneakers and socks. Others dressed in some pretty strange get-ups, including penguins, pieces of fruit and superheroes. The colorful characters are a Bay to Breakers tradition. Police report 19 arrests, but didn't provide the details. In in recent years, police have cracked down on runners drinking during the competition.

Catcher Desirea Gil tells The Arizona Republic VanArsdall is "better than girls half her age." VanArsdall says after being a stay at home mom, she decided to pursue a degree in nursing. Her teammates even have a nickname for her, "Mama Bear."
UNLIMITED TIME OFF
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- How's this for a job: all the vacation you want, work for as long you like and however often you want to show up. It's not some slacker's fantasy, but the policy at the SmallBox Web marketing agency. CEO Jeb Banner says he wants his employees to be free. SmallBox Design Director Lydia Whitehead is taking advantage of the unlimited time-off policy -- but not abusing it. She works 32 hours a week, so she can pursue a master's degree. She tells the Indianapolis Business Journal everyone works together to make sure the job gets done.
SENIOR FIREFIGHTER
GARYSBURG, NC (AP) -- Don't try telling Lester Greenwood Junior that fighting fires is a job for a young person. At age 81, Greenwood answers the fire bell every time it rings. Greenwood has been part of the Garysburg Volunteer Fire Department since it was officially chartered by the state of North Carolina in 1979. Greenwood says he might not be able to pull the hose, but his experience can help his fellow firefighters. He tells a local paper (Daily Herald) that fighting fires is a passion that's hard to ignore, no matter how tired he gets.
